Throughout Asia travelers find that, in crossing from one mountain to another, one must go over a dangerous-looking bridge. In Tibet and Nepal these pedestrian bridges consist of ropes, perhaps with board steps. The hand rails, if we could call them that, are also of rope. Consequently, in crossing to the other side (Mark 4:35), one must cross a dangerous chasm on a shaking bridge.
There is nothing solid to a rope bridge; it shakes outwardly and seems to echo the soul of the nervous pilgrim. Life is like that for one who walks alone without Christ as his bridge. Peace on the outside is connected to peace on the inside. When we are inwardly at peace with Christ, our outer circumstances usually reflect this peace. After all, Christ is Lord not only of our hearts, but all nature as well. Even the wind and the sea obey him.
