This is the time of...

This is the time of year when television will have Linus going out to tell the world that the Great Pumpkin is soon to appear in the humblest, most sincere pumpkin patch. The viewers looking in at the cartoon world from the real world know the absurdity of Linus' quest. We feel sorry for Linus, knowing how hard it is to be a prophet in a skeptical world. The job of a prophet is thankless. Prophets must always stand apart from the world and see it through extraordinary lenses. There is a sense that no one chooses to be a prophet; at seminary there are no specializations in being a prophet. Prophets are made by the Spirit, and the Spirit is a little unpredictable. We might all have a shot at being a prophet. We might all feel compelled to speak when we would like to remain silent. The hesitation to be prophetic grows from our knowledge that the Pharisees and the Herodians of our time will be plotting to entrap us with empty flattery and hard questions. There will always be some Lucy yelling that we missed the boat because of our foolish ideas, and some Sally angry because she feels that our word led her away from trick or treating.
