Today it is popular to wear one of the bracelets with the letters WWJD on it. I suppose this is a revival of sorts of the question posed in the classic In His Steps by Charles M. Sheldon. In that Christian classic the church and community were challenged to live one year asking the question, "What would Jesus do?" in every situation they faced. The pastor, Reverend Henry Maxwell, and his congregation were forced to consider this question and its consequences. No one in town is left untouched by the brief probing question.
I tried to take myself back through every situation of just one day in my life recently. I listed the things that I had done. I asked myself WWJD? Oh, did I come up short! Remember the girl who jumped ahead in the long line at the bank? Remember the guy who passed on your left, then immediately cut back in front of you and turned right at the next street? He could have stayed behind you all the time and not made you angry. How did I react then -- not very well.
In today's lesson Jesus says that even the Pharisees wore Scripture verses on their foreheads and arms (Matthew 23:5). Can you imagine that? You don't need to imagine it at all. Don't judge the others who wear the WWJD bracelets. If you choose to wear one, be sincere and by example do what Jesus would do.
