The Today's English Version of verse 4 has it: "Tell everyone who is discouraged, 'Be strong and don't be afraid! God is coming to your rescue, coming to punish your enemies.' " This doubtless was often used during WWII.
Karl Barth, who lived in neutral Switzerland, had declared that Christianity had nothing to do with war and that nothing good came from war. However on September 8, 1941, Time magazine appeared with some excerpts from Barth's book, A Letter to Great Britain from Switzerland. How differently Barth now felt is indicated by these statements: "We Christians do not accept this war as a necessary evil. We approve it as a righteous war, which God commands us to wage ardently ... the ultimate reason which I put forward for the necessity of resisting Hitler was simply the resurrection of Jesus Christ."
Martin Borman signed a document which stated in part: "The National Socialist point of view is irreconcilable with the Christian ... If we National Socialists speak about 'faith in God' we do not mean the same God as the native Christians and their clerical exploiters ... The people must be wrested from the churches and their priests."
