Today's text has to do with living in the Spirit. I believe that it is clear that Paul is thinking of the life of a believer in terms of a divine relationship wherein the Holy Spirit becomes resident in the believer and guides the believer's life.
One of the real joys of my life was getting to know Myrtie Howell. You too can get to know her. Read the chapter titled "Life and Death" in Loving God by Chuck Colson. It will inspire your faith in our truly loving God.
When I met Myrtie Howell she was 93 years of age with a wonderful spirit and a very sound mind. My job took me to her hometown every month and she was insistent that I come to see her in her retirement apartment. On one visit I got her permission to bring a friend so I could have a photograph of Myrtie. Fourteen years have passed, but this lady who had such faith in the guidance of the Holy Spirit taught me more than anyone else that we can expect to suffer for Christ in our faith journey.
One day she shared with me a story I cannot forget. She told me that she expected to move soon to a nursing home. I asked her why this would happen. In her beautifully sweet accent she said, "It is God's will that I go there so I can witness to certain individuals God is dealing with. From there I will go home to heaven." In the coming months of her life it unfolded exactly that way.
When my faith is weak and I am battle-weary, I remember Myrtie Howell's sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. I ask God to help me, and he does.
