Tree roots are very important...
Illustration
Tree roots are very important to tree growth. There are basically two types of tree roots:
nonwoody and woody. Nonwoody roots are found close to the surface. Their purpose is
to soak up nutrients and water for the tree. Some nonwoody roots develop root hairs that
increase the surface area of the root system.
Woody roots are large lateral roots, which are found around ten to twelve inches under the soil and may extend as far as four to seven times the drip line (radius) of the tree. The primary function of woody roots is to provide an anchor or support for the tree. Some trees have roots which grow out horizontally from the tree at ground level. They thicken over time forming strut-like structures that add further support to the tree. These are called buttress roots. Some trees, such as mangroves, which grow in tidal mud flats, have roots that grow above the tidal water levels because tidal mud is anoxic, meaning it lacks oxygen.
Roots will grow where they find the most water, oxygen, minerals, support, and warmth.
Paul prays that Christ may dwell in our hearts as we are rooted and grounded in love; that our roots will grow wherever we find love.
