The Trial of God...

The Trial of God, by Elie Wiesel, is set in 1649 after a pogrom against the Jews in a village where many are massacred. Serious questions arise when the upright and just suffer at the hands of those who seem to be empowered for their treacherous actions. Mendel, the oldest and wisest character in this play, offers this observation: "God is closer to the Just struck by the whip than to the whip. God may punish the Just whom he loves, but despise the instrument of punishment; he throws it in the garbage, whereas the Just will find his way to the sanctuary."
