Truly our Lord is merciful...

Truly our Lord is merciful beyond comprehension. There are rare situations when
individuals have demonstrated love and selflessness to save others from death, or fates
worse than death. At the time of the liberation of Italy over 200 years ago, Countess
Evelyn Confalonieri received word that her husband, the Count, had been condemned to
death. She risked her life by rushing to the Emperor Napoleon and begging him to spare
the Count. Finally she was successful, but she feared she was too late. The death warrant
had been signed and was on the way to the place of execution. Could she arrive in time?
She threw herself into a conveyance stagecoach. She paid four times the usual amount
and had relays of fresh horses waiting for her. She never took time for herself to eat or
even taste food. During the painful journey she only had a small pillow to rest on.
When she reached Milan, she found the Count being led to the scaffold, but she was on time. She had saved his life.
During her very painful journey, she had only one thing to provide comfort, a small pillow that became bathed with her tears. She truly looked to God during this time of mingled hope and terror.
