Two words of advice to...

Two words of advice to the preacher preparing a sermon on a special day. The first, spoken by Charles G. Gillroy to a class in homiletics: "Preach a sermon in keeping with the theme of the day." The second, a side comment by Emil Bremner, in a discussion of the Trinity: "we should not be afraid to invoke the word 'mystery.' " That is especially good advice on Trinity Sunday, but as Bremner went on to warn, we wander into the realm of monstrosity. Proverbs 8:31 might well be used for a sermon in keeping with the day. Isn't this the bottom line, the mystery of the Living God forever active within his creation and delighting in the sons and daughters of man?
