Unclean! Unclean! Time was when...

"Unclean! Unclean!" Time was when this was all a leper could say for himself. And worse yet, this was the best that society could say about him. There was no cure; there was no help, no hope. The disease he carried was almost diabolically infectious. Were he not kept in isolation, the whole race would soon parish from the disease. It was sad; but separation was the only way.
Then came Christ, his healing hand, his healing word: "Be thou clean!" Folowing him, came his disciples, loving, caring, struggling to find a cure or a prevention. And they did. They did it for love's sake, and for his.
Several years ago, before the battle against leprosy had been as completely won as it has now, a news reporter visited a leprosarium where she saw the victims of this dreaded disease being lovingly cared for, their sores dressed, their hands held. The visitor said to a nurse, "How I admire you! I wouldn't do that for a million dollars!" The nurse calmly replied, "Neither would I." And without any interruption at all, she went right ahead with her work.
