In the United States, the only Jesus most of us know is the one who was born in Bethlehem. We've set that name apart from all other names as a way to honor Jesus the Savior. But maybe the people in Mexico and the rest of Central America have the right idea. Because there, Jesus is a rather common name. Many boys and men are called Jesus. We should remember that in Jesus' day, his name was not unique. For instance, when Josephus wrote a history around the time of Jesus, he made mention of at least 25 different men who were all named Jesus. And in the Gospels, when the crowds demanded that Barabbas be set free, it is the Gospel of Matthew that reminds us that Barabbas' full name was Jesus Barabbas. Therefore, naming the baby Jesus was not giving him a name that set him apart from all other people. Rather, the name of Jesus was yet another sign that in Jesus, God was close at hand.
