As a university professor she had taught many people who were now famous artists. But now at 86 she is dying in a hospital. Having survived most of her friends, and her former students unaware of her final illness, she feels alone. Even the minister who comes to visit is busy and can only stay for a short while. As he prepares to leave, she reaches out for the hand of the live-in practical nurse who has cared for her during the last two years and pleads, "Don't leave me." She has had a full and successful life; she is wealthy; but now all she cares about is that she not be left alone.
No matter how successful or unsuccessful we have been, no matter how lowly or famous, the thing that ultimately matters is that we not be left alone! We can bear the suffering, the unfairness of life, even death, but being left alone in these situations we cannot bear. That is why it is such a thrill to hear the miraculous good news that the almighty and gracious God becomes our servant and our savior who will never leave us alone. Nothing "will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."
