Veils have many uses. They are for beauty, to enhance or compliment what one is wearing such as a wedding veil or a lacy veil on a woman's hat. They are for privacy such as a sheer black veil a widow might wear at a funeral. In ancient times when women often adorned their hair with their finest jewels, veils were worn by the women in places of worship so that their hair and jewels would not be a distraction to those at prayer. Today in many Eastern countries it is required that women cover their faces with a veil when in public. In churches chalices were covered with a veil in some traditions. The fabric of the chalice veil usually matched the vestments worn by the priest/minister.
Some veils are sheer, some are opaque. They allow us to see an image or they completely obscure the person's face or the object they cover.
