The very first performance of Handel's Messiah took place in Dublin in April, 1742. There was one more performance of the oratorio in Ireland, and then the composer brought it to England. The English premiere took place in Covent Garden in March, 1743. In the audience was King George II. Wearing his royal robes, he was so moved at the inspiration of "The Hallelujah Chorus" that he spontaneously arose to hear the full chorus all the way to the final "Hallelujah!"
Ever since that night, audiences and congregations have stood for that glorious music in praise of Jesus Christ, the King of kings!
