We are at war with...

We are at war with our environment. We have hunted whales almost to the point of extinction. The elephants have been slaughtered in Africa, as hunters track them down in search of their valuable ivory tusks. At present, there are more than 800 animals on the endangered species list. And 3,300 more are being considered to be added to that list. Scientists believe that within the next 30 years, one out of every five species of animal will disappear from the face of the earth.
In the northwestern part of the United States there is a struggle between logging companies and those who are trying to save the northern spotted owl. In Montana, there is a conflict between road builders and those who are trying to save the grizzly bear habitat. And in South America, a war is waged between those who are chopping down the rain forests and those who are trying to save the countless animals who live in those areas.
Humankind has acted with arrogance toward the environment. Perhaps these words of humility that Jesus offers should be followed as we deal with the world around us.
