We must have confidence in Christ's promise to return to this earth even though we do not know when he will come.
During the Second World War, General Douglas MacArthur was commander of the American forces in the Phillipines when the Japanese invaded those islands. The great General was ordered by the President to evacuate for safety. Before sailing, however, he softly said to a group of soldiers who were left on the islands, "Be brave! I shall return!"
During the next two and one half years he went to Australia and reorganized the allied forces in the Pacific. He led the forces victoriously from island to island until finally on October 20, 1944, he waded ashore onto the Phillippines. In a radio broadcast to his soldiers he loudly answered, "I have returned, just as I promised." That was a night of celebration. The period of waiting had ended. The day of victory had come. General MacArthur had kept his promise to return.
How much more dependable is our Lord's promise to return. We should wait and watch for the fulfillment of that promise.
