We often seem to want...

We often seem to want things to happen to us in a predictable manner and are afraid of the unexpected. Yet, it is precisely the unexpected, the openness of unknowing that leads us closer to Christ.
Herod wanted to murder Jesus because they feared him politically. Some Jews wanted to kill Jesus because they feared him spiritually. What fear keeps you from Christ? Perhaps it is the fear of the unexpected?
In a truly great sermon called "The Unexpected," Bishop (Episcopal) Robert Atkinson quotes the Scot poet, George MacDonald, who wrote:
They were all looking for a king
To slay their foes, and lift them high;
Thou cam'st --a little baby thing
That made a woman cry.
O Son of Man, to right my lot
Naught but thy presence can avail;
Yet on the road thy wheels are not,
Nor on the sea thy sail!
My fancied ways, why should'st thou heed?
Thou com'st down thine own secret stair;
Com'st down to answer all my need —
Yea, ev'ry bygone prayer.
When we expect the unexpected we are drawn closer to Christ.
