We were hiking up a section of the Appalachian Trail as it wound its serpentine way northward through the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The day had warmed considerably after a chilling night, and perspiration soaked our headbands, as we leaned into the climb up the mountainside.
High above us an opening in the trail beckoned, like a door into a new world. "Come and see!" it seemed to call. So we climbed faster, with expectant eagerness. What would we see?
When once we attained the utmost point in the trail, the trees were parted and we could look across a vast expanse of mountains and river valleys. Sweeping away into rich blue horizons, the land was a glorious canvas of spring greens, splashed here and there with dogwood and redbud.
My friend turned to me and, in awe, simply said, "God is great."
And what could I reply, but "Amen!"
