Weeks ago, we stood by the manger and heard the singing of angels. They told of good
news of great joy to all people. By Luke's third chapter, Jesus was standing knee-deep in
the Jordan. He had come to be baptized by his cousin, John. It was a holy moment. Luke
tells us that the Spirit of God descended on Jesus and God spoke: "You are my Son, the
Beloved; with you I am well pleased." In Henri Nouwen's beautiful little book, Life of
the Beloved, he shines his spotlight on this story as God whispered the word
"beloved" in Jesus' ear. Nouwen says that this was the only time that God spoke these
words to Jesus. Later, preparing for his crucifixion, high up on a mountain there was a
transfiguration. God spoke to Jesus in the presence of three disciples and said: "This is
my beloved." Nouwen says that this word, beloved was the word that would carry Jesus
through all the ups and downs of his life. Jesus must have remembered that voice that
came and spoke to him. You are my beloved. Nouwen reminds us that when we hear this
word beloved from the lips of God we, too, can proceed with faithfulness through
whatever comes. The beloved of God stay the course, move mountains, and follow their
Lord in discipleship.
