We've adopted all three of our dogs from the animal shelter. Rescued dogs seem to make the best pets. They know they've been saved from a life in the pound, so they tend to be much more appreciative than pure bred dogs. One of our dogs, however, had some "behavioral issues." He didn't want to do anything we commanded him to do. He wouldn't sit, he wouldn't stay, and he wouldn't get off the furniture. So one Saturday morning, my dog and I attended a dog obedience workshop.
The instructor had some very helpful advice. She said, "For dogs, obedience is built on love, not fear. The only thing a dog wants to do is please his master. If you show your dog you love him, that dog will love you right back and will want to do anything you've trained him to do."
The same thing applies to human beings. Our love for God means that we obey God's commands.
