What are your associations with the word "repent?" For me that word brings to mind a sign posted on a tree outside of Rochester, New York during my teenage years. It was a sign admonishing people to repent of their sins and turn to God in Christ for forgiveness. I also remember that word being scrawled on a placard being caned by a gaunt and severe-looking man on a New York City subway. For me that word has always had a harsh, confrontational, cold feeling. Peter, in Acts, alters my understanding of that word. As he uses it, it is a word of invitation, encouragement, and even reassurance. I find this to be so because of what Peter associates with the word: "Repent ... that times of refreshment may come from the presence of the Lord ..." Repentance, says Peter, is not an invitation to a grueling interrogation, but a homecoming party. Such is the irony - welcome irony - of the Gospel.
