What do you think of when you hear the word freedom? Usually, freedom is understood politically and personally. For example, in America we are free. There is no despot ruling over us; we elect our officials. There is no rigid class structure that pre-determines our fate in terms of careers to pursue. We have genuine choices at every level of our life together.
Martin Luther, sixteenth-century reformer of the church, wrote about freedom at a deeper level, a freedom that arises out of an abiding relationship with God to shape the very character of daily life. In his treatise Christian Liberty (1520), he writes two apparently opposite sentences, but when taken together express a profound insight into the nature of true freedom: "The Christian is the perfectly free lord of all, subject to none" AND "The Christian is the perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all." In other words, the Christian is free from sin, death, and the power of the devil because of the unmerited love of God through Jesus Christ's death and resurrection. AND, the Christian is free for unfettered service to meet the needs of the neighbor in the spirit of thankful joy for the abundant blessings from God received in faith.
