What does it profit us...

What does it profit us to gain the world and lose our lives, or to gain great fame and power, only to end in disgrace and ruin?
Huey Long may have wondered about that. The enormously popular governor of Louisiana could properly be said to have bamboozled the public in his rise to the top, only to be caught and disgraced in the end. An example of his duplicity comes from his campaign methodology. Louisiana has large populations of both Southern Baptists and Roman Catholics, leading Long to fabricate this story: "When I was a boy, I would get up at six o'clock in the morning on Sunday, and I would hitch our old horse up to the buggy and I would take my Catholic grandparents to Mass. I would bring them home, and at ten o'clock I would hitch the old horse up again, and I would take my Baptist grandparents to church."
Finally one of his campaign staff challenged him: "Huey, I didn't know you had Catholic grandparents."
Replied Long, "Are you kidding? We didn't even have a horse!"
