What is it like to...

What is it like to be totally alone? You know how it feels when you enter a room full of people who know one another, but do not know you. There is the usual politeness as people introduce themselves, but quite often this is as far as it goes. You are left feeling isolated. You see people joking with one another, embracing one another, and you are left forcing a faint smile while desperately looking for someone you know.
Then, in walks a close friend. You feel immensely relieved. How good your friend looks as he walks over to you. Suddenly, the isolation is over and you are feeling much better now about being in this room. Your smile is real and natural.
Now, imagine this scene once again. You are visibly different, even unattractive. People are looking at you strangely. What joy when your friend arrives and, by focusing on you, legitimizes your presence and brings an end to your agony.
