When constructing a building, it must be plumb and level. It must be perfectly vertical
and horizontal or gravity and weather will reduce it to a pile of rubbish. So also, when we
construct the building of a life or the building of a society, we must first be aligned with
God in faith and obedience, which is life's vertical dimension. Then we need to be
morally in line horizontally with our fellow humans.
The understanding of life's crucial two dimensions didn't come about naturally. The idea didn't drop one day into someone's mind. The clearest understanding of life's two dimensions springs from the source of life itself, the Trinitarian God. Different religions over the centuries have formulated partial instructions for a religious life. However, from the God of the Bible came the full realization that a genuine human life must clutch to God in faith and then genuinely care for our fellow humans.
Jesus confirmed this basic vertical/horizontal orientation of our lives. He taught it. He affirmed it when others taught it. Finally, his cross demonstrates these two dimensions. The vertical beam pointed toward heaven. The horizontal crossbeam reached out in both directions to humanity. Jesus' cross with his body upright toward heaven and arms stretched out to others is the symbol for true human life.
