When Debbie and Pat Lawless of Canton Township, Michigan, came upon fourteen-month-old Christian in a Romanian orphanage, they were attracted to the dark and beautiful boy with a shy smile. It was only after they had adopted him and brought him to the United States that it became apparent that he was not a normal child. He would become depressed and withdrawn, or hyperactive and out of control. He had learning difficulties and had problems communicating. Brain scans by Dr. Harry Chugani of Children's Hospital of Michigan revealed deficiencies caused by the lack of emotional and sensory stimulation while he and other children lay unattended in Romanian orphanages. Because he was hardly ever held or cuddled or taught, he failed to develop.
