When I was a teenager...

When I was a teenager I attended an ecumenical gathering called an Ashram. Following a period of prayer, one of the leaders of the Ashram, whose name was Ken, came up to me and asked, "Are you planning on going into the ministry?"
I was shocked by Ken's question. I couldn't understand how he could walk up to a complete stranger and ask a question like that. When I found my voice, I said, "That's not something I've ever considered."
Ken looked at me in astonishment. "I was so sure you were going to study to be a minister. Well, I'll just keep you in my prayers, and we'll see what God has in mind."
I haven't seen Ken since that Ashram, but I think of him often, and when I do, I thank God for him. Without his prayers, I may never have heard God's call to the ministry of Word and Sacrament.
