When I was a young...

When I was a young boy I worked for a few summers picking cucumbers. It's hard work, bending over out in the hot fields all day. We were paid by the bushel. The easiest way to fill a bushel was to pick the biggest cucumbers, the ones we called "culls." It took less big ones than small ones to fill the basket.
The problem was that the buyers didn't want the culls. They only wanted the nice medium and small cucumbers for pickles. At the shed, therefore, there was always the process of "culling out" the big ones, so that the good ones would be left.
