When Jesus calls us to be at peace with one another, he does so with full recognition that it is not an easy charge. Commoner and royalty alike have failed spectacularly to heed the call.
Sir Winston Churchill, admired by millions for courage and statesmanship, was far from peaceful in his interpersonal relationships. Once confronted by Nancy Astor, who advocated women's rights, he took such strong issue with her view that he inflamed her to fury.
Angrily, she said to him, "Sir Winston, if I were your wife, I'd put poison in your coffee!"
He shot back, "And, if I were your husband, I'd drink it!"
