When John Barrymore, the famous Shakespearean actor, was starring in Hamlet on Broadway, the then-equally-stellar actress, Jane Cowl, showed up at the theatre and appeared in one of the boxes set aside for dignitaries. Her arrival at the matinee performance caused a considerable stir in the hall, and the audience was clearly divided between focusing on her box or on the performance on the stage.
Barrymore himself plowed ahead with his tragic role, appearing to be oblivious to the distraction. But when he came, at play's end, for a curtain call, he looked in the direction of the actress' box and said, "Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Cowl for the privilege of co-starring with her this afternoon."
