When the new pastor arrived...

When the new pastor arrived at his first parish, he formed an immediate relationship with the "chief pillar of the church." This man served in the following ways: Clerk of Session, building chairman, Christian Education chairman, many hours helping to renovate the church building, usher, greeter, and a variety of other jobs. The pastor quickly discovered that this active church member did all of these things to be accepted by the people. As the church grew, and more people accepted more responsibility, he was displeased. He became angry with the pastor for causing him to be replaced, and, in his mind, no longer needed. He may have conquered outer space, but not inner space. For two years, the pastor and he met to talk about his spiritual life, and to see the connection between grace and works. -- Keller
