When this passage talks about keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, I am reminded of open water swimming. Swimming in open water, in the ocean, in a lake or a bay, is very different from swimming in a pool.
In a pool, you have clear water, lane lines and black stripes on the bottom of the pool to keep you headed in a straight line. But in open water, you have none of that. The water is usually murky and you have no way of knowing if you are swimming in a straight line or slowly heading off course. To swim a straight course in open water, you have to pick a landmark and lift your head out of the water every few strokes to check your position relative to it.
In our spiritual lives, we have to do the same thing. The world is often murky and there are no lane lines to guide us. So we need to continually check our position in relation to Jesus to keep us on course.
