When a tornado warning sounded...

When a tornado warning sounded in Jarrel, Texas, on May 27, 1997, two young members of the high school football team, John and Michael Ruiz, left their trailer home for what they thought to be a safer place, the house of their teammates, Erik and Ryan Moehring. Tragically and ironically, the Moehring house was demolished, and all four boys, including the Moehring parents, were killed. Meanwhile, the Ruiz home from which they had fled stood unscathed. The boys had heeded the warning but went in the wrong direction for safety.
In today's Gospel John the Baptist issues a call to repentance, a warning to prepare the way of the Lord. But he not only calls us to turn from sin and unbelief, he also sends us in the right direction for salvation. He points us to the Messiah, for whom he is the forerunner, to Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.
