When two football teams are battling for victory in a close contest, most fans get pulled into the midst of the emotional struggle. A person may normally be very quiet and mild mannered but a long completed pass for a touchdown will bring such a one to his or her feet, cheering and jumping for joy.
When victory is snatched from defeat, it's nearly impossible to simply smile and say, "That was nice." We just have to be more excited and openly express our exuberant feelings.
Israel was continually beaten down by her enemies and lived in constant fear of humiliating defeat and even annihilation. The prophet Zephaniah is so emotional and excited about the future victory that Jesus will accomplish, even though it's 600 years in the future, he tells the people now to jump for joy.
How many of us have shouted for joy because Jesus came into our world, gave his life in our behalf, and promised salvation? If we can get caught up in the struggles of football teams and "go bananas" over a sport's victory, shouldn't we be voicing many more and louder shouts over our eternal victory, already won for us by the Savior?
