When we take Jesus' promise to heart, we can face death confidently, even when it confronts us out of season.
John Gunther, U.S. journalist and author of Inside Europe, was the father of a handsome 18-year-old son whose future seemed to hold nothing but promise. He and his wife Frances were grief-stricken when the young man developed a brain tumor. After 14 months and two unsuccessful operations, it became clear he would not live long.
After the first operation, his parents agreed with the doctor that their son should be told what was wrong. The physician went in to speak privately with the patient. He explained the gravity of the situation. The boy considered it all, then looked the doctor in the eye and said, "How shall we break it to my parents?"
