While in Jerusalem our tour...

While in Jerusalem our tour group went to the Garden of Gethsemane. With a little imagination one could imagine Jesus of Nazareth standing on the hillside looking across the Kidron Valley toward the city. Of course, the walls that now stand were not yet in place. Jesus could see flickering torches approach. To the east there is nothing between Jerusalem and the Judean Wilderness. What kept Jesus from simply turning around and fleeing to the safety of the wilderness? The answer of course is in the prayer, "Thy will ... not mine."
One preacher I know has refused to move from an inner city appointment. Even though the church will probably never enjoy growth and prosperity, still my colleague refuses to move. When he was asked why he simply responded, "Because this is where I believe God needs a preacher to stay." Not surprisingly a handful of stalwart members have also decided to remain in the area. When they are asked the same question, "Why?" their response is the same. "This is where we believe God wants us to minister." The witness is remarkably the same. The will of God constrains God's people.
