Why do you seek the living among the dead?
In "The Male Animal" James Thurber portrays a man who never grew beyond a touchdown he made in college. Year after year, party after party, he re-enacted his victory. It is as if this man were blocked way back there, on a fated day, when a minor triumph became a major agenda. Truly he sought the living among the dead.
People write poetry when they are young. As time goes by too many responsibilities block out the inspirations. Yet, year after year they think of themselves as "poets." Or, to put it in a way we all understand, "I know I could, if I would." There is a lot of death at work in this thinking.
So much death to be cherished as an excuse for taking risks, moving on, trying harder. So many little resurrections that are life-giving possibilities.
