William Henry Harrison, then Governor of Indiana Territory, negotiated with Chief Tecumseh in 1810, the year before the Battle of Tippecanoe. The great Shawnee was standing, and Harrison had someone offer him a chair. The man said to Tecumseh, "Warrior, your father, General Harrison, offers you a seat."
Lifting his long arms high, Tecumseh said, "My father! The sun is my father, and the earth is my mother; and on her bosom I will recline!" And he stretched out on the ground. (Adapted from Benjamin Drake, Life of Tecumseh, Cincinnati, 1841.)
