Woodrow Wilson proved to be a strong President during World War I and he provided outstanding moral leadership to the American and Allied cause. Probably his most important speech, pointing to a better world order, was given on January 8, 1918, in which he set forth Fourteen Points for a peace settlement. On December 16, 1918, France was so grateful for victory and so pleased with President Wilson's plan for restructuring Europe that they presented his wife Edith an extraordinary brooch. The brooch, created by the famed French jewelry and glass designer, René Lalique, is about six inches across and about two and a half inches high, with tiny diamonds etching olive branches, and with eight glass doves perched symmetrically upon them. Unfortunately, the symbol of peace never fulfilled the hopes of the world, for the Fourteen Points required a League of Nations. While the United States ratified the peace treaty, it refused to join the League of Nations, dooming the dreams of peace almost from the beginning.
Jesus obtained peace for us by his victory on the cross over sin, death, and the power of the devil. He promises us his Holy Spirit through whom he offers us that peace, a true and lasting peace with God, such as the world cannot give.
