In the world of human drama, saying "good-bye" has always been a hard scene for me to play, especially when the characters involved have endeared themselves to me. Parting, for me, has never been a "sweet sorrow." It's been more life a confrontation in a shock/trauma unit! The disciples probably felt this way when Jesus left them on Ascension Day.
And what of Jesus' feelings?
Well, Jesus literally was on cloud nine because now his presence and power knew no limits. His Holy Spirit was released to be with his disciples all over the world, and together they would continued his work. In a manner of speaking, Jesus' ministry simply took on a new dimension.
Luigi Santucci, author of Meeting Jesus A New Way to Christ, wrote about the Ascension, but from Jesus' perspective. In the passage, Jesus tells his disciples:
After I've ascended, he (the Father) and I will be wherever you are in the world. Then nothing will be strange to you ... Whenever you leave a country you'll know that you're not altogether abandoning it, because you'll leave me there ... Distances will be wiped out from the moment when I left the hilltop and set out on my travels through the world. Then you'll understand that I only pretended to go away. You'll understand it for this reason: that you'll no longer feel afraid.
My life doesn't end here; if it ended you too would die. It goes on ...
