The world looks like a hostile place. To such brittle and fragile life-forms as we are, we could get the idea that because God's creation is hostile, God himself must be a wrathful judge bent on punishing the wicked and making things hard for the innocent.
Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952 for his work as a medical missionary in Africa. He is famous in other fields, also. His theological work and musicology work on Bach are still standards in their fields. He also wrote on political and social philosophy.
Schweitzer was asked how he could preach so effectively to the natives of Africa. He said, "Oh, these people are born scared, live scared, and die scared of evil spirits. I limit myself to saying that in spite of appearances and behind the mystery and cruelty of life, there is not terror but love, the Father of Jesus Christ."
