Writers as diverse as Dostoevsky...
Writers as diverse as Dostoevsky, Kafka, Kierkegaard, and Tolstoy have discovered the
power of the parable to draw readers in and make a point. Here Nathan develops his
famous "Parable of the Rich Man and the Lamb" to confront David over the king's
adulterous affair with Bathsheba. Not only was Nathan's approach effective in sneaking
past David's defenses, it likely saved the prophet's life. Nathan knew King David had the
power to condemn him to death. The beauty of Nathan's parable was that David
condemned himself. The greatest parables of all time, of course, were those of Jesus.
