In the year 2000 tens of thousands will go to Oberammergau to see the world-famous Passion Play. It's been performed every ten years since 1634, with the citizens of the town playing the roles. It is wonderfully staged, of course. Each scene is from the Bible and carries a spiritual message. The play consists of scenes during Holy Week leading up to Calvary. Every so often though, there will be a scene, called a tableaux vivant on center stage. We might call it a flashback, taking us back to an earlier story in the Bible which is similar to the one in Holy Week. One of those tableaux vivants has the patriarchal figure, Joseph, in a gold chariot, dressed regally, the crowd bowing before him. The Oberammergau production draws a connection between the Old Testament and the New. As Joseph was honored in ancient Egypt, so Christ is honored "with a name which is above every name."
