Years ago a letter appeared in Dear Abby written by a young lady who was having family problems. She was married with two young children. Her parents were divorced and remarried. At Christmas, she was invited, along with her family, to her father's house, her mother's house, and to her in-laws. That Christmas, she spent the entire day dragging her husband and children all over town. This Christmas, nobody in her family wants to go visiting. She can't invite her parents to her home because they don't get along, and she knows that they will be upset if they don't see their grandchildren on Christmas Day. She signed her letter -- A Woman With Family Problems.
I hate to hear of people who are experiencing family problems. It is sad when a family becomes divided and a house is filled with conflict and fighting.
This is also true for the church. The church is the family of God. God is our Father and we are God's children. We are brothers and sisters. For this reason it saddens me when I hear of churches that are divided. Satan loves nothing more than a good church fight. How can a church do God's work in the world when the people in that church are fighting among themselves?
Paul is concerned with the church at Corinth. It must have upset him when he learned of the divisions that were within the church at Corinth. He tells them to work at harmony. This is a goal for all churches.
