Years ago a newspaperman visited the Oakland Raiders training camp at Santa Rosa, California, to interview the quarterback, Ken Stabler. The aspiring young journalist had just visited a nearby historical monument, the Jack London home. The hero-worshipping writer read some of London's writing to the quarterback:
A quote: "I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled in dry rot ... I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy, permanent planet. The proper function of a man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time."
The newsman asked the quarterback, "What does that mean to you?" Stabler answered, "Throw deep." -- Mosley
