As a young adult, I had my tonsils removed. Others had that done when they were children, but I kept putting it off. At last, the family physician advised that it be done. I was hospitalized for an overnight. I remember how much, how very much, my throat hurt when I wakened from the anesthetic. Indeed, I recall that for two weeks, I chewed aspirin gum before eating.
And you may be sure that I was more sympathetic from then on with anyone who had a tonsillectomy, with anyone who had any kind of surgery, major or minor. When one has experienced anything, he or she is usually more sympathetic and empathetic from then on.
Our Lord understands whatever we are going through, because he has gone through it.
