The young boy asked his grandma why she was always so happy. It seemed strange to
him to hear her tell of how she was happy and always singing, even in the midst of the
"dirty thirties." He asked, "What did you have to sing about, Grandma?"
His grandma replied with a tale of faith. She recounted how God always provided for them. When her children's clothes were completely worn out, a relative would unexpectedly send a bundle of used clothing. Grandma would tear the clothing apart and make new clothes for her children. When the food bin was empty, it always seemed like a train from the west coast market gardens would come in with a load of potatoes or apples. "We never had much, certainly not any money, but we had enough. God saw to that."
Then the little boy's grandma said something that he never forgot. "I sang and was happy so that people would know the graciousness of God." She related how other people in the area always looked at her family and remarked, "God is with that family."
Joel prophesies that when God blesses Israel, it will be evident that God is in her midst.
