The young pastor needed answers...

The young pastor needed answers. He had a rash of key leaders preoccupied with end-time speculation. One elder proclaimed in a public meeting, "I know it's getting close ... I can just feel it in my soul!" Heads nodded in robust nonverbal agreement all around the room. What concerned the pastor was multiple links being made between political or environmental trauma and Christ's return. People cited the unification of Russia, AIDS, terrorist activity, and even Baptists falling for Mormonism. So, the pastor did some research. He contacted the National Earthquake information center, researched counterfeit religious growth, and even studied discipline trends in public school. The results were mixed, but his conclusion was specific. In a sermon to his questioning congregation, he made a point: we, as God's people, should not worry so much about decoding signs as being spiritually sober. Our goal is not supernatural sign and wonder insight, rather it is being moral marathon runners. For even if we have explanations about the End of the Age, we still must decide how to live.
