The young woman sat in the pastor's office clasping and unclasping her hands. "I'm embarrassed to even be talking about this," she said, "but I'm just afraid I'm going to end up an old maid."
The pastor knew that many of her close friends had already married and divorced. Some were in trouble with their second marriages. He said quietly to her, "Is it possible that God is calling you to singleness?"
"But what about my friends?" she answered.
"Well, I know a lot of them have marriages that seem to be collapsing. I don't presume to speak for them, or to know much about their situation, but it's possible that some of them were called to singleness as well, and you turned out to be the better listener."
She never married. But neither did she curse fate, nor wait for someone else to bring fulfillment to her life. She found it on her own.
