By your will, O God...
Illustration
By your will, O God, by your will.
Your will be done, as it is in heaven --
not the sacrifice of blood;
calves bawling, sheep bleating,
the stench of fear,
the sweat that burns our eyes,
the sting of smoke, the sear of flame --
but the will of One who chose plain fishermen,
the foppish Nathaniel, dour Thomas;
who spoke to a Samaritan woman
of things deeper than the well he sat upon;
who chose a madwoman, touched by the streets,
to be the first to see him resurrected.
Your will, O God, as it is in heaven --
where angels, preparing the feast of beggars,
sing songs of joy and issue invitations
to prostitutes and lesbians, lepers and those with AIDS,
the lame, the blind, those paralyzed by fear and shame,
peering from the favela darkness at the glory
of He Who Comes, trailing glory,
to eat this Feast with us. -- Herrmann
